Chicagoan Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) founded Roots Music Rambler as a music and travel blog in a pre-pandemic world. COVID killed events and travel plus her desire to play her banjo. Falls texted her in 2023 and said, 'Let's bring it back as a podcast!' He was raised on John Prine, babysat on Waylon Jennings and taught to drink and cuss the proper, mountain way. He hails from Pikeville, Ky., the birthplace of Dwight Yoakum, whose annual festival is Hillbilly Days.
On the latest episode of Roots Music Rambler, Frank and Falls talk about the recent controversy around Jason Isbell’s When We Were Close which struck an emotional public outcry from Justin Townes Earle’s widow. Hear what they had to say when you download or stream the episode available now wherever you get your podcasts.
The guest this week is even more interesting as RMR welcomes Son Volt guitarist John Horton (formerly of The Bottle Rockets) to talk about St. Louis and the Mesopotamia formative days of the Alt Country movement.
The episode also features Francesca Folinazzo’s recap of her recent Mecca-like journey to Belleville, Illinois, the home of the birth of Uncle Tupelo. And she and Jason Falls will share their regular Pickin’ the Grinnin’ recommendations for new music.
It’s an Alt Country-centric episode! Dial it up, gang!

John Horton (Son Volt & The Bottle Rockets) offered up an explanation of why his home city of St. Louis doesn’t have the reputation of a “sound” despite being the Fertile Crescent of the Alt Country movement of the 1990s. Hear more of that and much more about Horton’s role in the genre, those bands and what Jay Farrar is really like on the new episode of Roots Music Rambler.
